From 1 November 2026, Armenia will stop accepting applications for a special residence status, a document that was granted to foreign nationals of Armenian origin for ten years. The changes have been made to the Law "On Foreigners" and will take effect in the autumn, reports the legal publication Iravaban.net.
Applications submitted before 1 November will be considered under the previous rules. Special statuses already issued will remain valid until their expiry.
Once the amendments take effect, two types of residence permits will remain: temporary and permanent. Armenian origin will become a separate basis for obtaining permanent status, which will be issued for five years.
An application for permanent residence on the basis of national origin will have to be submitted in person. To do so, applicants will need to register on the unified electronic portal, upload documents and book an appointment with the Migration and Citizenship Service. According to the draft government decree, to confirm origin applicants will have to present a birth certificate and documents proving kinship with a parent of Armenian nationality. If the birth certificate does not contain a nationality entry, another supporting document will be required — for example, a baptism certificate. Originals must be brought to the appointment at the service.
