The Croatian studio Croteam and publisher Devolver Digital have announced that they have begun work on a new instalment in the Serious Sam shooter series. It is titled The Third Encounter and will be a direct sequel to The Second Encounter, released in 2002.

Despite the title, this will be the seventh main game in the series, known for its convoluted chronology. The developers emphasise that the new entry is not a side story but a genuine continuation. According to them, this time the hero Sam will travel to alien worlds to strike at the very heart of his enemy Mental's army.

The creators promise to preserve the classic gameplay: battles against large groups of enemies, arcade-style shooting and cooperative play. Sam's arsenal will include new weapons, but familiar ones from previous games will remain. The game already has a page on Steam, where it can be added to a wishlist; the authors also promise full Russian localisation.

The developers note that the project is at an early stage, so no release date has yet been set.
