Actor Eddie Murphy will headline the drama series The Chairman for the streaming service Peacock. However, Matthew Weiner, creator of Mad Men and author of the new project, has departed over creative differences with the producers. American outlets Variety and TheWrap report this.
According to journalists, a new team of showrunners has already been assembled, and their names will be announced shortly. For now, work in the writers' room is suspended for two weeks while the new leaders take over. The plot of the series has not been disclosed.
For Eddie Murphy, this will be his first leading role in a scripted series in his entire career. He began in television on the comedy show Saturday Night Live, which he left in 1984, and later created and voiced characters in other television projects. For Matthew Weiner, The Chairman could have been his first series since The Romanoffs, which was canceled after one season in 2018.
Among Murphy's upcoming projects are the fifth installment of the animated film Shrek, in which he will again voice Donkey, and a standalone film about that character. The actor will also play Inspector Clouseau in a new version of The Pink Panther.
