Actor Keanu Reeves will take the lead in the action film Whirlpool for Netflix. The script was sold to Warner Bros. back in 1993, but the project never got off the ground.

The film will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. He has previously worked with Netflix on Red One, whose script also remained unrealized for a long time.

The action of Whirlpool unfolds over a single night. A US marshal is assigned to guard the fiancée of an arms dealer who has agreed to testify. Meanwhile, a hurricane hits the city, communications go down, and the heroes must contend not only with gangsters but with the elements.

Greg Fitzpatrick's script was sold 33 years ago, at a time when, after the success of Die Hard, studios were actively seeking similar lone-hero action films. For the new film, the text was reworked by Mark Bianculli, who also worked on the script for the remake of Cliffhanger, another 1993 film.
