Sony has opened pre-orders for a collector's edition of God of War: Laufey that does not include the game itself, neither on disc nor as a download code. The set, called the Laufey Collector Box, appeared in European PlayStation stores on October 13 and costs €150, or £130. It contains a glowing figurine of the heroine Fay, a deck of 51 oracle cards and a small album of illustrations.
The game itself, an exclusive for the PlayStation 5, will be released on February 16, 2027. Its standard edition will cost $70, and the expanded edition $80. Fans of the series who want both the game and the collectible items will have to make two separate purchases.
The new God of War: Laufey, developed by Santa Monica Studio, centres on Fay, the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus, the main characters of the previous installments. After her death, she enters the underworld, from where she tries to protect her family.
Sony is not the first company to take this approach. In September, Rockstar presented a $400 collector's set for Grand Theft Auto VI, also without the game included. The decision drew criticism but did not stop resellers from listing the sets on eBay for $1,500. Against this backdrop, the price of the God of War edition looks more modest.
Players' reactions to the news have been mixed. Some linked it to Sony's plans to abandon physical game releases entirely from 2028. Others considered the €150 price for such a set reasonable and noted that it does not prevent buying the game separately, including on physical media.
