Television studios have turned to well-known horror films to make them into multi-episode shows. Two such series came out in the autumn: Carrie on Prime Video, based on Stephen King's novel, and Crystal Lake on Peacock, based on the 1980 film Friday the 13th.
The creators took a risk, since they had to expand self-contained storylines and introduce changes that fans of the original works might not welcome. Yet, as The Wrap reports, both series debuted with strong ratings.
In the publication's view, the success shows that reviving old storylines can still attract streaming audiences. By releasing the series on the eve of Halloween, the studios counted on genre fans who revisit the classics at this time of year but might be tired of the same films. Familiar titles caught their attention, while the altered plot offered a new experience.
