The National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Yerevan is preparing to open a new cultural venue, the Small Concert Hall. It will be housed in premises previously occupied by the Opera Club.
Tigran Virabyan, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Armenia, told a press conference that the space will serve exclusively creative purposes. The new hall is planned to host chamber concerts, children's opera and ballet performances, and other cultural events.
According to the theatre's director, Karen Durgaryan, the premises belong to the opera theatre. He said the new stage will host ballet and opera productions for young audiences, with the aim of teaching children how to go to the theatre: from buying a ticket to watching the performance. "This series of events will contribute to the aesthetic education of a new generation and will, on the whole, support theatrical life and its further development," he said.
Renovation work in the hall is still under way, but concerts and performances will begin already. The director said the hall will be fully ready by February, with new seats and "beautiful design solutions".
The opening of the Small Hall will take place on 1 November, the 155th anniversary of the birth of Armenian composer Alexander Spendiaryan, after whom the theatre is named. Pianist Ayk Melikyan will perform works by Spendiaryan and other Armenian composers.
