In Tbilisi, stray dogs caught on the streets are secretly buried at night in specially dug pits. This is what an investigation by the program Shabatis Eteri on the TV channel Pirveli says.
For several weeks, the journalists watched the municipal animal shelter on Tvalchrelidze Street. According to their data, after midnight a white minibus with no identifying markings leaves the shelter and heads to Veli Cemetery. The authors of the video claim the vehicle is filled with dog corpses. According to their observations, the burials take place on weekdays, but outside working hours, at night. Sometimes the minibus makes two trips.
On social media, residents write about dogs that disappeared from the streets and had been under official care arranged with the state. Human rights advocates suspect that among the killed animals there may be vaccinated and healthy ones.
People familiar with the situation told the journalists that the dogs are euthanized at the shelter on Tvalchrelidze Street before being taken to the cemetery. Under Georgian law, the euthanasia of animals is strictly regulated and permitted only in extreme cases. Judging by the photographs the investigators managed to obtain, the procedure could have been painful for the animals.
