The Lord of the Rings Online receives The Wolves of Mordor expansion

Almost twenty years after the release of The Lord of the Rings Online, the developers continue the story of Middle-earth. In the new expansion, players will face the ancient servants of Sauron, who have returned after the War of the Ring.

Daybreak Games and Standing Stone Games have released The Wolves of Mordor, an expansion for the multiplayer game The Lord of the Rings Online, which launched in 2007. The new chapter is designed for characters at level 160 and continues the story after Sauron's fall.

Although the War of the Ring is won, werewolves, some of the oldest servants of the Dark Lord, have returned to the Gorgoroth plateau. Players must set out on a quest to stop a ghost wolf that has broken free. The story is inspired by the events of the First Age in Tolkien's books, when werewolves served dark powers long before the events of The Lord of the Rings.

The expansion opens three new areas in the wild lands of Draugardh: Heledhris, scorched by the Mountain of Doom; the jagged plains of Part-Ravas; and the mist-shrouded forests of Nan-Ogol. According to the developers, they contain more than two hundred quests. The maximum character level remains unchanged. Instead, a system called "Survival Instinct" has been introduced, which allows all of a player's characters on the same server to unlock new skills and tactics. Another innovation is "Neighbours": companions can now move into the player's house, share stories, give gifts and assign daily quests.

The expansion is sold in three editions priced from $40 to $130. Before the end of the year, the developers promise to add several dungeons and a new raid. In 2027, The Lord of the Rings Online will mark its twentieth anniversary.
